Tourém is a small frontier village between Portugal and Spain at the border. It has a reputation as the “smugglers’ nest”. Many villagers who are still inhabitants there nowadays were involved in the business in the past. Dangerous actions, hard livelihood, and unforgettable events… all had craved a mark on their memories.
Born in Beijing, China, Agnes Meng is a documentary filmmaker based in Portugal. She graduated from DocNomads Erasmus Master and is now a PhD student at Universidade Lusófona. She worked as an anthropology research assistant in southwest China and the Tibetan region. She is now focusing on her trilogy documentary project about folk stories and past lives in Douro, Minho, and Trás-os-Montes, the northern regions of Portugal.
