and Revolution

OFF SCREEN – Summer Course is a meeting of presentation, debate and development of research and creative practices within the scope of Cinema, Social Sciences, Arts and Communication Sciences. It is structured in two parts. The first presents research and creative reference practices, the second presents essays and research developed throughout the year by participants who attended the Course and works from Universities and Institutions linked to AO NORTE projects and ID+ CINEMAS / IPCA.

The Course is part of the general thematic of the Melgaço International Documentary Festival - Identity, Memory and Border. In 2024, it is proposed to address the theme of Cinema and Revolution, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution and attaching particular importance to the cinematography that addressed said theme in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Chile and in Portuguese-speaking African countries: Africa - Cinema and Revolution.

It also seeks to articulate and bring into contact creative experiences from diverse sources – such as filmmakers, scientific and artistic associations, university researchers and cultural producers from different countries and continents.

The Summer Course is coordinated by José da Silva Ribeiro, Manoela dos Anjos Rodrigues and Alfonso Palazón, and is an initiative of AO NORTE, through its Cinema and Digital Narrative Studies Group in collaboration with the Melgaço City Council and ID+/IPCA - Institute for Research in Design, Media and Culture / Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave.
