Impermanence, or, of memories from the brandeiro life

Café O Brandeiro, Branda da Aveleira
Luís Miguel Portela

In the parish of Gave, impermanence has always been a constant. Long before immigration, transhumance was already pushing its people away, those who climbed the mountain each summer to their high pastures to live, farm, graze livestock. But then everything changed. The road made the path easier and transhumance unnecessary. The last brandeiros still take their herds up, but they are only a memory of that hard life that today is celebrated every year in the feast at Branda da Aveleira. It is that memory that this project aims to portray. (Reissue of the original exhibition, presented at "Filmes do Homem" festival in 2018, as a result of the author's participation in the photography residency "Frontal Shot" in 2017)
