Of all that we have seen, all that we have lived, the fragments that remain are part of what we are. Or what we were supposed to be. After the advent of the cinema, the images written with lights and dancing shadows, with or without sound, took place in our memories, mixing with the dreams and memories already lived, in an irreversible process of reordering and expansion of the recognizable world, capable of being translated, imagined, remembered. These narratives of cinema are not limited to the project of recounting what has happened before the lens-eyes of the cinematographic equipment. They reinvent these events, and expand them in the space-time, redimentioning senses, paths, temporalities, horizons. The collective memories. The affections. The longing, even for those places and times that we have never inhabited.
The workshops will take place in parallel, with each participant indicating the workshop in which they wish to register.

There was an old saying that went "whoever made their house in the square / took a big chance thereby / for some, it was too small / for others, it went too high." Usually associated with the domestic sphere, privacy and intimate life, the house is also a social marker of high visibility and importance. The house is a public face of its occupants, it materializes the way each one is represented and how one intends to position socially. It defines a taste, a situation of prosperity or scarcity, a vision of the world. The shape, the colors, the materials, the way the house extends to the threshold of the public space through the gardens, the decoration of the outdoor spaces, the walls, the doors ... all this composes a vast lexicon of signs that intersperse the other, inviting it to enter into the cross game of social classification and distinction. The house is therefore a social inscription device of the utmost importance. "The house places itself at the center of the migratory adventure", it is stated in the book "Dream Houses”. To leave their land, to flee from poverty in search of a better situation in another country and a project of life for themselves and their people, often means coming back on a regular basis to give an account of themselves and their new condition, radically different from the one they had upon leaving. This is why the house is loaded with small and big things, it is assumed as a gesture of rupture in relation to the past, as if it were a broad-spectrum semiotic device announcing an identity, the recognition, sharing and the difference in relation to the original belonging group or, simply, to whoever passes by.

Assuming photography as our means of intervention in the summer course, we propose to explore its potential in more than one aspect and take as a preferred starting point the following two proposals: 1) photo albums are repositories of family memories in which the house of residence or vacation is the anchor element of events and episodes of life. We ask that you bring your albums or set of photographs in which the house comes up as a trigger of narratives that can take on different final products. 2) we will follow the route of Álvaro Domingues - My house is my world – directing the photographic record of that itinerary. The confrontation with the points of view and the way of representation / interpretation of the itineraries made by the participants will provide material for reflections that will integrate the key issues of the summer course.

Field diary, reflexivity, mise en abyme... First person narrative is common in cinema, literature, painting, video games, digital narratives. In this workshop we will show and analyze some of these narratives and rehearse the construction of audiovisual narratives, or interactive digital narratives from the experiences lived in Melgaço - Filmes do Homem.

What memory is built in School through the cinema? What films do we include in the formation of students? What is the need to create "movie readers"? How can documentary narrative be an instrument of openness to History and the Contemporary World? How to help building a collective memory? From the reflection and analysis of three films we will try to answer the questions raised. Strategies and materials will also be found for application in the classroom and in the School Library.
Presentation of the projects done in the workshops.
In the sixties thousands of Portuguese people immigrated to France "on the hop", such was called the clandestine trip of those who sought a new destiny. We propose that you take, not a bumpy ride like the one from that era, but a leap to Melgaço and share with us the programming selected as part of Filmes do Homem.
