Frontal Shot
Film Residency

Frontal Shot is a film residency happening in Melgaço between July 29 and August 07, 2016, alongside FILMES DO HOMEM - Melgaço International Documentary Film Festival. The purpose of project PLANO FRONTAL is to contribute for an audiovisual archive about the immaterial heritage of Melgaço, to provide Espaço Memória e Fronteira with audiovisual works reflecting the history of the region, to promote documentary film and the appearance of new technical and artistic teams.

Four teams consisting of four young directors, four sound technicians and four cameramen will direct, for one week, four documentaries about local themes, yet to be proposed.

Plano Frontal's main targets are senior students on their final year attending higher education courses in Audiovisuals and Cinema or that have recently completed their education. The participants will be selected through application analysis and oriented by Pedro Sena Nunes, a Director/tutor with a large professional and pedagogical experience. All work will be framed and supported by a production team and a technical team formed by Carlos Eduardo Viana, Rui Ramos and Mário Gomes.

It addresses all those people willing to live through a unique cinematic experience, whose objective is to produce a documentary and to participate in the festival's activities. The organization committee will guarantee free room and board, from July 31 until August 08, to the twelve selected candidates and will provide logistic support for the teams to travel to filming locations. Each selected candidate will have to guarantee his own traveling, to and from Melgaço.

Photography Residency

Plano Frontal_Photography Residency will be happening in Melgaço between July 29 and August 07, 2016, alongside FILMES DO HOMEM - the Melgaço Documentary Film Festival. The purpose of this photography residency is to contribute for an archive about Melgaço, to provide Espaço Memória e Fronteira with works that reflect the region and to promote photography and the appearance of new photographers.

Three young photographers will direct, for a week, a project about local themes, yet to be proposed.

Plano Frontal_Photography Residency’s main targets are senior students on their final year attending higher education courses in Photography or that have recently completed their education. The participants will be selected through application analysis and oriented by Pedro Sena Nunes, a director/tutor with a large professional and pedagogical experience. Carlos Eduardo Viana

Carlos Eduardo Viana

Carlos completed his higher education in Cinema and Video at Escola Superior do Porto and has a degree in teaching. Teacher at grupo 200. Coordinator at Oficina do Cinema e Audivisuais of Centro Cultural do alto Minho (1981 to 1994) and founding partner/Chairman of AO NORTE - Associação de Produção e Animação Audiovisual, NGDO, in 1994. Awarded a grant from the French government, he attended two work placements in direct cinema (initiation and specialization) at Ateliers VARAN in Paris. Coordinator of educational activities developed by AO NORTE in the field of cinema and audiovisuals, Encontros de Cinema de Viana and the website Lugar do Real. Director of several documentaries in Portugal, Angola and Cape Verde.

Pedro Sena Nunes

Pedro Sena Nunes

Pedro is a director, cultural programmer and teacher in the fields of artistic creation, documentary and experimental film, directed several films with the support of ICA / RTP - documentaries, fiction and advertising spots. Co-artistic director of Vo'Arte and co-founder of the Teatro Meridional Company, he is a consultant and coordinator of several cultural projects. Integrated team member of European projects Fragile, Unlimited and European Video Dance Heritage (EVDH). Co-director of the International Festivals InShadow, InArte and InMotion - Cinema and Dance, and programmer of Olhares Frontais at Encontros de Viana Film Festival for 15 years, also collaborating with the Filmes do Homem Film Festival. His artistic project focuses increasingly in a practice with a social dimension through the intersection of people with special needs and professional artists.
He’s been intensely dedicated to the pedagogical field for the last 24 years, running laboratories dedicated to creation and experimentation, both documentary and fiction, teacher in the areas of filmmaking, transdisciplinary narratives and the relation of performance with technologies in ESTAL, IPA, AM and EscreverEscrever . Teacher at the Documentary Film Masters’ degree from ESMAE (Porto) for 8 years and teaching coordinator at ETIC for 18 years, where he was creative director, and now cooperates in the implementation of the new HND courses certified by the world's largest educational entity: Pearson. Orchestrator and director of several projects in theatre, choreography and performance, he won numerous awards for his film, photographic and transdisciplinary work in Portugal and abroad. Co-creator of the project Generation Soma, supported by the PARTIS Program - Social integration through artistic practices, from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Lisbon (UL) in performing arts and moving image, an investigator at GECAPA in the experimental areas of intersection between body and image, and he is filming his new documentary project.

Rui Ramos

Rui Ramos

Rui was born in Paris in 1971. He has higher education studies in law, marketing and tourism promotion. Founding member and Executive Director at AO NORTE - Associação de Produção e Animação Audiovisual, where he assumes executive production of documentaries and the responsibility for the production of documentaries produced within Olhar o Real documentary course. Executive producer of Encontros de Viana - Cinema and Video (2001-2016). Artistic director and Head of Programming at Festafife ¬ Festival Internacional de Teatro de Marionetas (Puppetry) e Cinema de Animação (2007-2011) in the field of film animation. Founder and coordinator of Minho Film Commission. Works as a consultant in the field of Tourism and is an impresario.

Mário Gomes

Mário Gomes

Mário Gomes (1982) completed his studies in Science Communication in 2004, having before worked with various cultural and student associations. Since then, he has developed projects in theater, dance, music and cinema. In 2007 he moves to Madrid, where he works in the solidarity project SCREAM (Supporting Childrens Rights through Education, Arts and Media) , developed by the International Labour Organization. In cinema, Mário Gomes has worked with several filmmakers, such as Rodrigo Areias , Manoel de Oliveira, Victor Erice, Peter Greenaway , Edgar Pera , Joonas Berghall , John Canijo, Gabe Klinger, among others.

João Gigante

João Gigante

João Gigante, a native of Viana do Castelo whose path, after having graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Belas Artes, remains between the practice of visual art, having exhibited his work in various important exhibitions within the national and international art scenes and the practice of production and organization of events and artistic projects, such as the coordination of the department of visual Arts at AISCA (Association for Cultural, Social and Artistic Intervention) in Viana do Castelo, the direction of Parasita Magazine (with Hugo Soares), to the project Arame (Sound design) and the projection and organization of social and ethnographic projects, maintaining its artistic and conceptual characteristic.
He is currently attending the Masters’ degree in Audiovisual Communication at Escola Superior das Artes e Espectáculo of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.

Miguel Arieira

Miguel Arieira

Miguel was born in 1987 and graduated (2010) in Audiovisual Communication Technology (field of video) from Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo at Instituto Politécnico do Porto. With previous musical training (Academia de Música of Viana do Castelo) and therefore a special proximity to the field of sound, he develops, during his degree course, a specific interest in documentation, collection and sound mixing, specializing in capture and post-production audio. In addition to recording and sound design, focusing on technical research on spatial notions in stereo and 5.1, his work, however, also complements other aspects - directing, camera operation and photography – and he has already participated in several projects for film and television (fiction, documentary and advertising). Presently working with AO NORTE - Associação de Produção e Animação Audiovisual, where he is responsible for capture and post-production audio and is also directly involved in the documentary recording work undertaken by the association.

Daniel Deira

Daniel Deira

Daniel Deira (1982) has a degree in Audiovisual Communication Technology by Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo from Instituto Politécnico do Porto. He also has higher education studies in engineering. With special interest in the field of sound it is in this area that specializes particularly in audio recording and post-production. He collaborates with AO NORTE - Associação de Produção e Animação Audiovisual since 2013 and also works on other projects, not only in the sound field but also as camera operator.
