Cinema and Migrations

Outside the Screen - Fora de Campo is the designation for the Summer Seminar that runs parallel to FILMES DO HOMEM. It is a meeting for reflection and multidisciplinary debate - Social Sciences, the Arts and Communication Sciences - around the theme Cinema and Migrations and derives from the cooperation between the Melgaço Town Hall with the AO NORTE Association, in collaboration with Universities and Investigation/Research Groups in Portugal, Galiza and Brazil.

The objectives of the course are the approximation of artistic and technological approaches, and from human and social sciences to the cinema; the collaboration of Networks and Research/Investigation Groups participating at the Festival; the involvement of local populace and community in artistic and cultural activities performed at the Seminar and in the Festival; to contribute for the affirmation of local culture and development.

The course will have a theoretical component – conferences and seminars, a theoretical-practical workshop, a practical component – field work and film watching integrated in FILMES DO HOMEM – Melgaço Documentary Film Festival and a project and final product to be presented by the participants (an effort will be made to credit formation within the participating institutions).

Summer Seminar

Schedule of theoretical and theoretical-practical activities: 10h00-13h00, 14h00-17h00

Schedule of practical activities: 17h00-20h00 and 21h00-23h00 - combined with Festival FILMES DO HOMEM.

Venue: Melgaço - Casa da Cultura

Duration: 30 hours of classroom training and 30 hours of practical component: individual research, field work, production directing and final report. 2 ECTS.

  • 30 hours of classroom training: 15h of theoretical component – conferences and seminars; 15 hours of theoretical-practical component workshop.
  • 30 hours of practical component – field work and film watching integrated in Filmes do Homem Festival and Hop to Melgaço and a project and final product to be presented by the participants.

Course Objectives

  • The approximation of artistic and technological approaches, and from human and social sciences to the cinema;
  • To provide for the collaboration of Networks and Research/Investigation Groups participating at the Festival;
  • the involvement of local populace and community (teachers, cultural animators, local government) in artistic and cultural activities performed at the Seminar and during the Festival;
  • To contribute for the affirmation of local culture and development.

Evaluation (optional) – To obtain the course certificate all pupils will have to participate in the making of an audiovisual production and submit a final activities report.
