Lost and found

I believe that the creative process is very similar to wandering along a path full of amazing things to discover. An adventure for those whose curiosity is greater than their fear of getting lost. In this workshop, I will share my creative processes (in the plural because they are constantly evolving), from writing, filming, editing, and the entire finalization process. I’m especially interested in sharing how stories find me, how I work on them, and how I give them form. Often, documentaries are the genesis of fiction films, and vice versa. There are stories in an image from the past, in a conversation overheard nearby, in projections of a future…

Seeing the world as an inexhaustible source of dramaturgy. This is the diversity we will explore, starting with my films—documentaries and fiction—and through practical exercises in this workshop, developing and writing a film idea. Finding without fear of getting lost.

Margarida Cardoso

filmmaker and screenwriter

Studied Image and Audiovisual Communication at the António Arroio School of Arts in Lisbon. She worked in Portugal and France as an assistant director, script supervisor, and set photographer. In 1995, she began writing and directing her own films—documentaries and fiction—exploring subjects that intersect her personal history with significant issues in Portugal's recent history, such as the colonial war in Africa, the revolution, and the end of the colonial era. Festivals like Rotterdam, Venice, and Locarno have screened and awarded her films. She also teaches cinema at Lusófona University of Lisbon, at the international DocNomads master's program, at the School of Arts at UC Porto, and at the EICTV in Cuba. In 2015, the Department of Literary, Linguistic, and Comparative Studies at L’Orientale University in Naples created the "Margarida Cardoso Chair," a center for creative practice and research inspired by her works.
